Palliative Care:

A Human and Respectful Approach to End of Life

by Susana Dibos

Coping with a terminal disease is too hard; it doesn’t matter if you are the patient or the relative because in both cases you have many things in your mind. There are a lot of thoughts about the end of life, how could it be? When is it going to happen? Or there are many emotions like fear, anxiety, uncertainty, guilty, etc. that you might think you can’t share with anyone. However there are some professionals who work in this kind of situations and bring a human and respectful treatment call: Palliative Care.

What is Palliative Care about?

Palliative Care was defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002 as “An approach that improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing a problem associated with life threatening illness (...)” [i]

When do you need it?

At first Palliative Care helped only people who were in their last days; the professionals took care of the pain and they prepared the patient and their family for the eventual death (Graphic 1). This concept had changed, now the patients start the Palliative Care when they are diagnosed. This means that patients are going to have Palliative Care at the same time as the Potential Curative Treatment because they have their own objectives and they complement each other (graphic 2).

Where you can find it?

There are many Palliative Care teams that are developing around the world. We hope that this kind of service you will find soon in every hospitals, hospice or even in your own house if you prefer this way.

Who will need it and why?

Everyone who has been diagnosed with a chronic degenerative or terminal disease can have it. Because they have the right to be treated with respect, compassion, love and be care not only from their disease but of all the things that happen inside of them and are important for the patient or the relative.
